Course syllabus

  • Introduction: relevance of data management for real world applications; overview of DBMS concepts.
  • Traditional data models: the relational model and its languages.
  • SQL: relational data definition, querying and manipulation.
  • Data management through applications: stored procedures; usage of SQL from a programming language; triggers.
  • Conceptual design: the Entity-Relational model, conceptual design methodologies.
  • Logical design of a relational database.
  • Keynotes on advanced topics: normalization theory; indexing and query processing; transactions; access control.

Laboratory: use of a DBMS for exercises on the topics presented in the course.
